Jovian Mandagie

I never heard of this name before, and so when my friend started to make a fuss in Facebook over a 'Boxing Day Sale', I was like, what the heck is Jovian?

And so being the normally curious me, I started to do some research on it. It led me to Jovian Mandagie Facebook page, I browsed and browsed for a while, and I was like... wait a minute, this is pretty.

Actually, these are really pretty. I browsed over his collection photos, and was jaw dropped.

Jovian Mandagie is one of the talented gems of fashion designers in Malaysia. Designing baju kurung (Malaysian traditional attire), he bring it up to the next level by jazzing it up with modern cutting, beads, lace & modern style. He produced Ready To Wear collection (usually released during Aidilfitri & Aidiladha) and also custom made outfit for wedding or special event. Looking at his collection, I can say he is among the designer known for quality and stunning design, other than big names known worldwide like Rizalman or Tom Abang Saufi.

So here's his Aviraya 2012 collection for Aidilfitri - all gorgeous and pretty! 0_0

And below is collection for AidilAdha!

And here's my own version of Jovian. I'm a Jovianista! ;)

Selamat BerJovian! =D

H&M Lot 10 : The First in Malaysia!

I was having a training today at Impiana Hotel, when suddenly I have this urge to go and buy Samsung Note (haha random, I know :P). And so when I was gliding gracefully (in a Monorel, LOL) on the way to Imbi (Low Yat) I catched a glimpse below of a hype store with bling bling signboard on it, 'H&M'! And I was like, omaigod, I had soo forgot the fact that H&M just opened its first store ever in Malaysia at Lot10!

And so after finally got myself a Samsung Note (with 4 casings altogether, sigh. But one of them I got it for free :D), I hopped in Monorel again, and on the way, I made an abrupt decision to stop at Bukit Bintang and go to H&M instead of going straight back home. That is just soo me.

So here I am, Tadaaaa!

4 tingkat wohh!

Masuk saja terus ramai orang okayy. The crowd is just - everywhere! People looking around aimlessly, this lady with 8 outfits in her arms. Not enough with two arms, shopping bag (to substitute basket) are provided to make ease the female species putting in all the clothes they wanna try (and buy! Hehe).

The crowd

There are 2 floors for ladies (aren't we special? LOL), 3rd floor for men and 4th floor for kids. Altogether there are 4 floors! Isn't that huge? 0_0 I didn't visit the men and kids section (no point anyway) and so I just wandering about the 1st & 2nd floor, looking for anything that might catch my eyes.

There are a lot of things offer - clothes, of course (top, dress, blazer, jacket, trousers, knitwear, sweater, scarf, blouse, skirt, gloves, you named it!), shoes (high heels, flats), handbags, accessories (chunky bling bling, small purse/ name tag, earrings, necklace, cuff, bracelet) - in short, all items you might think of, they will be there!

All the in-hypes!

Too many people lining up for the fitting room, and so I just being confident and gamble to buy without try it on first. I do this always. My trick is I'll just pick up the smallest size available (or any small size that looks like alright on my body) and pay. Haha.

So here's my catch :)

Peach & mint knit sweater :)

Visit H&M store at Lot 10 for a LOT of cool stuff! And here you can visit H&M website (it is not an online store however, too bad *tsk tsk*) http://www.hm.com/my/

Enjoy 'hunting!' :D

Footsteps of the Prophet & How to Contribute to Community: by Prof Tariq Ramadan

These are points that I managed to jot down from lecture by Prof. Tariq Ramadan during his visit to Malaysia in July 2012. Hopefully it will be beneficial, insyaAllah, amin. Do comment if you have any thought to share or if there's any point need correction :)

Footsteps of the Prophet & How to Contribute to Community: by Prof Tariq Ramadan

1. Islam is unity and we are all equal, and the best among us is the one who is deeper in God consciousness (Ihsan & Taqwa)

2. Two state of pray:

a) Pray naturally - fetus/ baby, nature - plants, animals, etc
b) State of choice - making conscious decision and bear responsibility towards self, community & brotherhood

3. Problems with Muslim nowadays:

a) Incline to focus on routine or ritual (solat, fast, pilgrimage) and 'halal' or 'haram'. This is far from Islam during the time of Prophet, where Prophet Muhammad focus on developing belief (aqidah) & character (akhlak). The proof is the companions (sahabah) of the Prophet with exceptional quality in faith & attitude.

b) Misconception or lack of understanding of what Islam is all about.

- Islam is not just about halal & haram, dos & don'ts!
- Islam is not about who's going to heaven & who's going to hell - before asking whether a person is going to be condemned, ask ourselves, where are we in the picture?

c) Evaluating the success or failure of a Muslim by scaling our pahala/ sins, while the truth is, the highest level of faith in Islam is about our true intention when performing deeds for the sake of Allah (Ihsan).

d) Lack of deeper connection with God - Allah is not only to be scared, but most importantly, to be LOVED!

e) Arguing on trivial issue - Eg. issue on the word 'Allah'. The word 'Allah' is not exclusive only to Islam/ Muslims, since the Christians/ other religion's follower in Arabic spoken countries use the word 'Allah' to refer to God. 'Allah' simply means 'God' in Arabic.

f) Misunderstand the concept of hypocrite - those who realized their weakness & struggling to improve themselves are the true Muslims, while those who know they're wrong but not doing anything to improve but giving excuse of 'this is myself, and I don't want to be hypocrite' is the REAL hypocrite!

g) Misconception on Islamic practices - What is harsh is not necessarily right. Muslims do not follow the harsh way, but we follow the right way! Islam is about to feel good in this dunya & hereafter. There is nothing good about feeling bad & depressed all the time!

Assuming the harshest method as the best way of practice is misleading mindset!

Eg. Prophet Muhammad drink water during Ramadhan while travelling (musafir) as it is permissible by God.

4. Prophet Muhammad as role model:

a) Prophet Muhammad is reflection of Quran itself
b) Known as al-Amin (the Truthful & Trustful) even among his enemies
c) Send as rahmah (mercy) to the world
d) Consistent in his saying & doing
e) Tenderness in behaviour & speech
f) Demonstrating every quality that is normal as human being - Married, have children, do house chores, working & do business, etc

5. Following the footsteps of the Prophet. "If you love God, follow me (Muhammad), and God will love you."

How?

a) Principal - Nurturing honour, dignity & pride as a Muslims in the heart

b) Steps

i) Change the way we look at nature
- The world is a gift from God to humankind. See nature as a gift, not property
- Quran discussed about nature a lot, eg. surah as-Syams, al-Lail, al-Fajr, etc. Quran shows how to look at nature not just with the eyes, but the heart. Other name of Quran is 'Nuur' (light) - to make someone look at things in different way
- Look at nature & think about the intelligence behind every creation
- How we take care of nature reflects how we take care of ourselves!

ii) Change the way we look at human

Exemplary way of the Prophet towards:

Enemy
- Just & kind towards the enemies. Eg. Enemies captured after war were released without punishment

Family
-Tender towards his wives & family. Eg. Helping his wife & family to perform house chores.

Companion
-Love while correcting & guiding the sahabah. E.g. when the sahabah had overworked themselves by fasting whole day without break, pray all night without sleep, he correcting them by saying it is indeed a good deed, but human need rest, and even he himself did break his fast & sleep before night prayer.

iii) Change the way we look at life
- The way we look at the world is a mirror of how we look at our own life

iv) Change the way we deal with the society

- The poor is neglected by the powerful but celebrated by the believer (to love & to be loved by the oppressed)
- Don't judge a person by outer appearance or condemning a person without understanding reason behind the action
- NO racism in Islam ever!
- Stand & protect a human being in the name of justice and not religion-biased. Eg. Prophet offered protection to victimized person regardless of religion.
- Protect & raise the status of women to the highest level. Eg. The first person the Prophet sought for after received the first revelation of Quran was his wife, Saidatina Khadijah
- Respect & tender towards kids, youngster & elder. Eg. Prophet respect opinions from his nephew, Ali bin Abi Talib even though he is still young. Play around and jokes with kids and the orphan

How can we say we are obeying the Rahman if we do not give rahmah to the community?

c) Consistent
- Consistent in saying (words) and doing (action) through the guidance of Quran & Sunnah. As normal human, we will make mistakes here & then in life, but what is important is to correct the mistake and self-improve

d) Objective
- To fully understand, what is the purpose for improving life & contributing to community? What is the purpose of living Islam?

6. Characters of the Prophet that we must have!

a) Confidence - Never doubt Allah
b) Trust - Trust Allah, ourselves and the community
c) Ambitious - To change ourselves inwardly & outwardly, and consequently to influence the world
d) Courage
- Have the courage to speak out & stand up for the just cause regardless of religion, race or gender.
- Do the true meaning of Jihad: The word of truth in front of a tyrant before you have power in your hand
- Speak of the truth & stand by the side of justice regardless of external factor like money, power, majority support, etc
e) Connect - Connect with God, ourselves & the world. Balance our share & contribution in dunya & akhirat. Be successful in both life!

7. Two key elements in life:

a) Khilafah :The world is not our own, but a gift which we will be accountable for. Ask ourselves, what have we done as khilafah on this property of God?

b) Remembrance of death : Remember that one day, we are all going to die, and we do our best to come back to life in the best possible way

MESSAGES FOR MALAYSIAN

1. Education

a) Education is not only about science, math, physics etc, but most importantly, to build CHARACTER in a person

b) Connect tauhid with humanity through education, knowledge & understanding
-Education : Know-how, meaning & objective of knowledge

c) Sense of priority
- Where do we put our knowledge?
- What do we consider in choosing the place to put our knowledge? Eg. Salary?

d) Key questions in establishing/ shaping education:
- What is the purpose of education?
- What are the ends of knowledge?
- What are the ends of education?

Quote: "If Malaysia do not invest in education to get not only citizen with efficient but also dignity, you are destroying the future of humanity!"

2. Arts

- Discipline of arts: Music, poetry, literature, architecture
- What is the creativity in arts that is specifically represent our culture & identity as Malaysian?
- What is the definition of ethical entertainment? What is the standard? Is it practical & how can we achieve that?

3. How to choose a leader? What is the characteristic of a leader?

Regardless of religion, the Prophet will choose among them those who have:

a) Competence - skill
b) Integrity - upright
c) Accountability

Closure

1. Asking the question of 'do God still loves me?' means God still loves you
2. Learn to love & forgive ourselves
3. Start doa with yourself - ask all the good things for you from God, so you can in-return, do good to the society
4. Stand up for what is dignified in the name of dignity & justice
5. To feel good, smile & laugh is halaal! :)
6. Don't practice victim mentality. No one force us to choose the path we are taking now except ourselves. Be responsible for ourselves and realized the fact that we can choose between what is right & what is wrong
7. Do not feel guilty or hopeless, but strive to contribute to the community
8. We are responsible for ourselves & our community, and we can make it!

Wallahualam.

Review: Cozzi Hotel, Teluk Kemang, Port Dickson

Assalamualaikum and hi everyone! Me and my family came to Port Dickson for a family short trip (2 days 1 night) and decided to stay at Hotel Cozzi, Teluk Kemang. The reason being is, it is very near to the beach (3 minutes walking distance) and near to local restaurants and other facilities (hospital, pharmacies, petrol station, ATM machine, grocery shop, etc).

Cozzi Hotel: Up-close (Courtesy: Google Image)

Cozzi Hotel - End view (Courtesy: Google Image)

Here's my review of Cozzi Hotel:

Pros:

1. To it's credit, all staff here, especially the receptionist, are very polite and helpful. They are attentive to customer's request and complaints, very cooperative, friendly and the service is also very quick. I have no complaints towards them. Kudos to Cozzi Hotel's staff! :)

2. Very near to the beach, and at the backside it provides a swimming pool, which is very recreational for a fun family activities, hangout & water games. It has some 'sukaneka' activities and competition, and is very family friendly.

The swimming pool (Courtesy: Google Image)

3. Near to local delicacies.

Cons:

1. Not sure about other rooms, but the room I checked in was smelly. I ask for air freshener and the staff came to spray some in my room.

2. No cupboard! :(

3. No remote control for TV and air conditioner!

4. No feet-towel!

5. No tea/coffee packets in the room

6. No electric kettle or hot water/ dispenser in the room! Just an empty plastic jug & 2 mugs

7. A very small mirror and no make-up table

8. Cockroach poops in the bathroom! They were smelly - asked the staff to clean it up and they came in and clear those things very quick, thankfully.

9. Very small hot water dispenser at the lobby. One guest came and the hot water will be all gone. Had to refill the water and wait some more :(

10. No cloth-hanger provided

11. No free mineral water bottle

12. Only blanket without the white cover underneath! :(

13.  Water are everywhere in the bathroom and cannot be properly drained out, and the water pressure is very low

14. Parking lots is always full and would be a pain to find an empty one!

In short, the hotel itself is awful! Absolutely the worst hotel ever! (or is it motel? Dunno~) But the fact is, it is absolutely horrible! What a waste since the location is very strategic and the staff are all good, but the hotel management and the owner sure is terrible to run the hotel in this manner! Shame on you!

My advice is, better find some other places if you want to stay at Port Dickson. TQ.

Gangnam Style : Exposed!

Gangnam Style. It has exploded worldwide. Park Jaesang or his stage-name, 'Psy' has made it again, to be the most controversial popstar ever in Korea. The name 'Psy' which is the short form of 'psycho', reflect his newest sensation, 'Gangnam Style' the best. With weird-psycho video showing random clips shot at random places, paired with addictive auto-beat sound & catchy lyrics, Gangnam Style catch the interest of music lovers worldwide in no time.

The infamous horse dance

The song instantly becomes a phenomenan & trending rapidly worldwide; and Malaysia is not behind in this. Talking about Gangnam Style particularly in Malaysia, the reactions were diverse. When I say diverse, it means the video received different response from different group of viewers. For some, it was received with much interest & people starts making parody of the video. Example from Malaysian are those from Hitz FM, Fly FM, Jinny Boy, and lots of other Youtubers. This lot regards this song as a total wrecking-brain song, make fun of it and make their own crazy version just for the sake of fun. Others like the catchy beat of the songs, and were addicted to it.

Some others might like it because of the naughty dance shown in the video. Coincidence or not, I have to admit that the dance move does look a bit like imitation of sex position. However it really depends on one's perspective - one might interpreted it as imitation of sex position, and another might looked at it as just a silly crazy horse dance move.

I would like to particularly comment on reaction by the 'religious' groups. You know, youngsters talking about religious stuff and attained a lot of favors and 'followers'. Some familiar names such as Hilal Asyraf, Angel Pakai Gucci, Rose Vermin, might comes to mind. I would also like to comment on some other Syeikh Facebook & Ustazah Twitter, and also the famous-anonymous Illuminati & anti-Yahudi freaks.

Before I start, let me clarify something. This is my personal opinion in my personal blog. Hence my disclaimer is, this entry is by no means a personal attack to any individual or religious group. This is just my general observation of situation & hence I deduce my opinion based on that. No offense is intended.

I believe that when one deals with a culture which is different from his or hers, one should realized that he or she must not only consider the exterior view of the culture. It is not only just about the culture itself, but the more important aspect of it - on how to perceive a culture, how to receive a culture, how to react to a culture, and how to think about a culture. Living abroad for 4 years & a half, I personally feel that such experience has trained us to step back, observe and give a deep thought about what is presented in front of us, grab a hold of clear & thorough view of the subject, to avoid from coming out with half-cooked or hasten judgment. This also explained why am I being meticulous over such a feeble (to some) subject like Gangnam Style. For me, it is more than just a silly video or a catchy-meaningless song.

From religion (specifically speaking, Islam) perspective, they are some very strict opinions which did not allow any form of music at all by or for a Muslim, where it has been perceived as 'haraam'. Some other opinions from other scholars suggested that music are 'halaal' as long as it doesn't lead us away from Allah & Islam.

Few reactions I've observed could be summarized as follows:

1. Music is haraam, and so automatically it applies to Gangnam Style as 'haraam' and so nullify all other arguments.

2. Following opinion which suggest music as 'halaal' as long as it is not associated with 'haraam' elements, it invites listeners & viewers to evaluate on the following aspects:
a. Does the song bring a good message to the listener?
b. Does the video contribute a good value to the viewers?
c. Does the dance reflect a good image & virtue of a Muslim/ Islam?

From the above questions and honest answers, one could find the answer to the question, 'Is Gangnam Style suitable for Muslims?'

3. For Illuminati-freaks, all elements in Gangnam Style video & song are associated with Illuminati conspiracies such as 'one-eye', peace-sign, cross-sign, etc. Such group claimed the ultimate goal behind Gangnam Style is to spread the influence of 'Illuminati'.

4. For anti-Yahudi freaks, all elements in Gangnam Style video & song are associated with 'Jewish conspiracy'. For example, lyrics of the song has been said to meant 'I want to be a Jew' or 'saya nak jadi Yahudi'. Hence this song is labelled as a 'soft weapon' by the Jewish to bring Muslims down and astray from Islam via entertainment & sex promotion.

5. For anti-Kpop group, they will generally oppose and sneer at everything related to KPop, be it Gangnam Style or not Gangnam Style.

For group 3 and 4, I advice for them to get a life. Such claims are irrelevant, illogical, groundless, and blatant nonsense. To all Muslims or non-Muslims out there, please do not get caught or tricked by such nonsense claim. First, the dance is a horse dance. Or might be a sexual dance -_-" It is normal in that sense, and has no relation to Illuminati. All the speculations about Illuminati in Gangnam Style is overrated, and are illusions of those who are obsessed with Illuminati. For the love of God, stop associating everything in the world with Illuminati.

Second, before jumping into conclusion, we might want to learn a bit of Korean language. To associate Gangnam Style lyrics with 'I want to be a Jew' is the most ignorant thing one could come out with. To those who spread out this false tales, please find something better to do. And to those who apparently fall into this trap and believe this propaganda, maybe can take this as a lesson learned - so that we will be reminded to ALWAYS RESEARCH first, before believing in something blindly.

Certain groups (sad to say) especially Malay Muslims, could easily fall into this type of lie. I would like to stress that when we received a news or statement, it is very important for us to do fact-check or research on that matter first, before coming out with any conclusion. There is no harm in researching; and for sure it is very easy to do. Access to Internet make you capable of almost anything - we can try to find the fact by ourselves first. Research and curiosity of truth is the key. The most important thing to keep in mind is, 'THINK first before believing.'

To put all the blames of entertainment & sex trend among the new generation solely on foreign culture also doesn't help. Most of us are well-aware that such entertainment from foreign countries might not be good for us and might not blend well within our local culture. However the root of the problem does not lies solely on the entertainment or sex promotion itself, but on the fact that we are easily influenced by those; which shows we do not have concrete self-belief, principle and true identity to face such waves. Our society has reached a worrying & alarming state.

Coming back to the issue of response by the religious group, I can't help but feeling disappointed.

The ultimate goal for a Muslim is to please God, and there is nothing more important than that. This is acknowledged by all practicing Muslims in the world, and because of this virtue that we hold, every Muslims' action will need to be referred to God. Will this please God or displeases Him? This is the question that we will asked.

However by focusing on this question alone, we forgot the fact that we live in a world which inhabited not only by Muslims, but also non-Muslims from various background. Hence it is crucial to realize that this world does not evolves around Muslims only. A thing shouldn't be viewed from Muslim's acceptance only. A culture should not be viewed from Islamic perspective only or it will do injustice to it. Such approach may block our curiosity to explore other culture - or the most dangerous - it will block our capacity, capability & curiosity to LEARN about other people.

It is not a few - where I stumbled upon comments such as, 'tak senonoh betul Gangnam Style ni... buang masa je tengok' or 'Gangnam Style ni merosakkan akhlak...terkangkang-kangkang...lirik ntah hape-hape...tak takut Tuhan ke tiru bende macam ni?'

With all respects, I have no intention whatsover to object this. I agree, too, that the dance really does not represent a very good image. It has no Islamic value; neither the video nor the lyrics. However, such comments stop there. And this is the very fact that is disturbing to me. Because it stops there. People discussed about music, choreography and lyrics of a song from Islamic perspective only, and it stops there.

Why does it happened?

Why is it happened in such a way?

Muslims or non-Muslims, we have to understand that a song is a form of arts. And so it shouldn't be discussed in such a shallow way as that. Art is abstract; it has no boundary. Behind arts, there is a story. The story can be as ridiculous as it can get, but there is always one. Hence, art can also bring us to history, culture, science, custom, literature, etc. Why are we, Muslims, restricted our mind and think from one view only, and did not venture to other field of discussions?

We have a Korean song in hand. First, it is in Korean (Hangul). From here, this song easily lead us to one topic: Language. Discuss about the lyrics. What do the lyrics mean? Is it justifiable for us to conclude this song as meaningless or nonsense if we don't even understand what does it talks about?

This song titled 'Gangnam Style'. What is Gangnam? It is the name of a district in South Korea. Now it leads us to geography of Korea. What is it so special about Gangnam? Is there any particular interesting aspect about Gangnam till it is featured in this song? There you go, it leads us to the culture & social life in Gangnam. What does it says about Gangnam? Lavish lifestyle, girls trying hard to be cool & hip. Is it always the case? Why the lyrics mentioned about the girl in two different situations? How is the situation in Gangnam evolved? Then we will be taken to its community & background history of the people there.

How about the video? Why does it shows the singer in a luxurious place, only to realize that most of them are actually just common places of regular folks in Gangnam? Is there a satire or cynical elements tried to be put forth here?

See? There are just so much things to discuss about here. Music has so much things to offer. Why are we, Muslims, restricted our mind goggling around aspects that concerned only Islam and refuse to open our mind to learn about other things? Why are we always so uninterested in learning? Why are we always refuse to open ourselves to discussion of various aspects? Why are we so comfortable in our own cocoon, our own world that we do not have even a slightest interest to think about other views, other perspectives, other 'world' outside 'us'? Why are we so ignorant about other knowledge that does not concern Islamic value? Why do we stop thinking beyond our boundaries? Why do we stop thinking beyond our Muslims community & culture?

Is this all we are made of? Is this all Muslims are made of? Is this all we can think of, all we can offer? This is really sad. How selfish we can be - that we talked about Islam as 'global' and 'universal', and yet we do not even try to think twice before tossing and condemning things that we don't even understand.

All am I trying to say is, maybe we can try to change. Maybe we can try to change our way of thinking, the way we react to something. Knowledge is just too vast, deeper than the oceans, wider than the sea. Don't take it for granted out of arrogance as a Muslim.

An excellent intellectual discussion about Gangnam Style under the lights of culture, history, arts & literature here:

Selamat Hari Merdeka!

"Bagi mereka yang masih dibelengu ideologi terhutang budi dan membalas jasa, good luck. Kerana anda selamanya tidak akan merdeka."

This is a Facebook status of a friend, and once I read it, it stuck in my head like a glue. Because I can't agree more.

Malaysia has been governed by the same winning party since 55 years ago. Political groups in a democracy-base country like Malaysia - just like in other countries - made up of 'government' and 'opposition' parties. And it happened that the same party which had first governed the country after successfully obtained independence from the British Queen, still (until now) continuously dominate the parliament after such a long period had passing by.

Throughout the ruling of this party, many changes had graced the period. Various parties representing multiracial community in Malaysia, has collaborated to form an alliance - a stronger front-line, be it in the government or opposition side. Prime Minister changed from one to another - different approach & controversy had been witnessed by Malaysia for each different  leader.

My personal opinion is that, Malaysia is not that bad. Yes, we do not face any major crisis like war, maladies, natural disaster and alike. However, Malaysia is not in a very good state either.

55 years after Merdeka, Malaysia is still far-behind compared to other countries, particularly in education, economy, political health, social-environment, hygiene, poverty index, et cetera. This situation is prolonged years after years, with few changes & improvement, however make worst by political scandal from both government & opposition parties. Eventually in the current days, it creates a huge gap (or even worst term, hatred) between the two groups among the candidates and also extends to the supporters (not all, but most).

Pressing issues, repeated impairment and disappointment among Malaysians has lead to cries of change.

Changes

Talking about change, there's a few points worth pondering. First, what do we define as 'change' or 'reform'? How could we achieve the change? Or even more important, is there a need for 'change' at all?

Fate lies in the hands of God. However we can make better of our current condition, which is through 'efforts'. God Himself has said in the Quran that He will not change the condition of the people if they themselves do nothing to change theirs.

A country could be improved through many ways. Me myself believe that it should starts at individual stage. Changes should begin within an individual, to achieve a collective result throughout the nation. Afterall, this earth God has given us, has life in it. However it is 'human' who has the intellect and power to govern it, to do something good to it, or something bad. I've watched a Korean drama before, and it says, 'someone who has people with him, rules the world.' I can say I am pretty much agree to this statement. A country is made of people, and so this 'people' must, each of them, improve themselves to be a better person in overall. However even 'better' context can be a complicated issue to discuss about. How would we define 'better'?

Taking religion into this discussion, I believe it is not just Islam - but every religion in this world - preach to strive for the highest level of belief (aqidah), good deeds (ibadah), manners (akhlaq) and knowledge (ilm). As human, our basic needs such as meals, shelter, education - are the keys of escapism from worse living to better (it can be vice versa, but I will discuss the positive effect only here). Shallow it might seems, I would like to define these as 'better' from my humble point of view.

What is the 'change' that people talked about? Changes are demanded due to two reasons. One, for the sake of love towards the country and the nation. Second, for the sake of personal benefit.

Better education, better living condition, better economic status, better political institution, better manners & civilization - those are among the changes they cry for. These changes benefit the country, and of course, develop the standard of living and personal character of the citizen to a higher level (normally this is the case) as well.

From here, we can instantly see the link between the citizen & the government - the government should provide a living condition or environment that could encourage improvement of social status of its citizen.

As mentioned above, changes can start within individual, which is often neglected. Since governing a country has always been perceived as responsibility of the government, very often people forget that it is us, people, who made up a government. Politicians are nothing but human - a mere human - that is. And so, it is very important to develop fine characters in each citizen to produce much more quality candidates who will serve their best for the sake of beloved country and the people.

However from my personal observation, the changes are viewed differently from different group of people, whom categorized as follows (following what I think):

1. Those who truly want a change for the sake of country's betterment
2. Those who want a change of ruling government just for party's benefit
3. Those who want the change but refuse to take any risk
4. Those who think there's no need for change at all
5. Those who don't know what to do or what to think
6. Those who simply don't give a damn

The People

The 1st group usually sincerely love their country and persuade for awareness at individual level. Ideal it might seems, one has to be realistic - not all citizens in the country shared the same value.

Since 'people responsibility' is often overlooked, people prefer to focus on government. It comes to this conclusion:

1.  Betterment can be achieved by improvement of current ruling government, OR
2.  Betterment can be achieved by betting on new government & political revolution, which means overthrowing current ruling party

2nd group I mentioned above, would struggle for the 1st or 2nd conclusion, depending on which party they are supporting. The government supporters will backed the government, pushing for improvement; or if improvement is to no avail - will defend any action imposed by the government. For the opposition side, they will push forward the very best aspect of the opposition party, reveal mistakes made by the government & usually will opposed government's idea, ideology or any attempt to win their votes.

Of course, this is rather a general - or I will admit - a shameless blatant statement. Not all of the followers behave as such, however I personally feel that maybe up to 70% from a party's followers will support their party regardless of what happened, and were unable to differentiate between right & wrong. Blind loyalty is what I called it. I personally feel that the politicians did a good job in brainwashing their followers, where they will simply labelled anything related to the opposite party as 'bad' or 'wrong', unable to see their own weakness, blaming the whole party for a person's mistake, and will never acknowledge any good thing coming from the other side.

I have no intention to generalize people. However I believe, those who truly support their party's cause for a good reason will understand what I'm saying. Not all of the followers are blind; some choose to support their chosen party out of a very concrete & sound reason. However (for example), I dare to bet; there are very few who truly understand ideology of TGNA and carry the legacy of his dream. Majority are supporting PAS just because of its 'Islamic' image.

Hence for some (or maybe most) of the supporters, they see the only way to bring peace & changes to the country is through voting system & supporting the party which they believe will carry out their demands. Such conviction (most of the times) led to bias judgment when dealing with the opposite party, which is make worst by bias media channel & misleading information distribution.

Fear

Sometimes, people can see that changes & improvement are essential, however since the country has been under the same governance & administration for so long without major crisis when compared to other develop countries, people are skeptical or I think the more suitable word for this mentality is, 'fear'. People are afraid of making changes and taking such a major turn-around for things with unknown result. The end result is in the future - the uncertainty instill 'fear' in the heart of these 3rd group, who feel that the current situation is already comfortable enough for them. Fearing that change might make situation become worst instead of better, they oppose revolution & reformation. Staying in comfort zone is what they want than any uncertain struggle.

The concept such people usually use to justify this mindset is 'bersyukur dan membalas jasa'. This is something that I can't never comprehend.

First of all, we are thankful. I think most of us will agree with me that regardless of what our political stand might be, we are thankful for what we have. Our children can go to school, public transportation is improving, clinics & hospitals are accessible, etc. However the golden question is, 'what is this has to do with a country's improvement?'

Being thankful doesn't mean a country doesn't need a change. Demanding for a change doesn't mean one is being ungrateful for what he has! Hence I seriously didn't understand where is this concept comes from, how relevant it is and how in the world could it provide any paradigm shifts.

If one is thankful for what he or she has, it that means one is no longer entitle for improvement? Is staying at the same situation, same level & condition without change or revolution while we know we need to improve, is a way of showing gratitude? No it's not. Pardon me but I personally feel that it is stupid to think as so. How will the country ever developed if no efforts being made for the sake of 'gratitude'?

Revolution & reformation can be done in many ways. Talking specifically about 'political parties', changes mentioned here is either improvement of current government or giving a chance to opposition to show what they're made of. We think and we choose, which will provide the means to achieve betterment. Voting system is valid, campaign is valid, demonstration is valid. These are all methods that been practiced around the world, regardless of what issue they're being used for.

Hence such statement as, 'apehal la yg korang sibuk sangat nak ubah pentadbiran yg ada sekarang... kan kita aman skarang? Ada makan, ada kerja.... tak bersyukur ke dengan apa yang ada?'

Such statement might be valid from that person point of view, or maybe from my own point of view. However, my friend, have we ever stop & think, and consider about homeless people with no food & education? What about them? What about those with no proper meals, no clean water supply, schools 20 km away from home and no transportation? What about them? And what has been done to help them?

Comfort Zone

While we are talking about 'being thankful for what we have', it is easy for us to say so since we are in the comfort zone. It is US who are in the comfort zone. Not them. And so it is easy for us to feel that maybe, there is no change needed at all. Now is fine. Everything is fine just the way it is like this. But how about other people? And most importantly, how about the whole country in overall?

We keep talking about how civilized or high-tech are the Japanese, Korean, or even Americans. And yet, we feel that there are no changes needed in our country, and we should be thankful and hence no need to strive for changes, revolution and whatnot, while conveniently forget about those who suffer at the outskirt of the city. How selfish can we be? Has our comfort block our sense of duty & logic?

Looking at Malaysia now, changes are needed. Improvement is crucial. Betterment is essential. Whoever said that we are already OK, we are already fine now, is blind. Yes, I am thankful for being Malaysian; for I was born during the time of peace, with no wars or starvation. But Malaysia need to improve. WE need to improve.

Membalas jasa? This is another concept I can't fathom about. Again, what does it means? Membalas jasa to whom?

The way the country works is the same as appraisal in a company. Appraisal, leader, are chosen based on performance. We evaluate the performance, we trust them, we give them a chance & responsibility, and we see how it goes. If they continue to perform the best, then we can consider to remain them at the same position, or even promote them to a higher position. If the performance is bad, or getting worse, we might give them another chance, or we might consider other candidates available. As simple as that.

It is the government's job & responsibility to serve the country & the citizen. It is their job to do so. They HAVE to do so. Hence if they do well, we support them. If they don't, we have all the rights in the world to re-think our decision. Why in the world should the citizen 'repay the government'? Votes are cast on performance-based, that's it. No such concept as 'membalas jasa' is relevant. Because serving the citizen is not a favour or an act of kindness, it is a DUTY that a government must fulfill. That's it. Crystal clear.

 Ignorance

Confusion due to multiple 'version' of information feed. This group will usually stand in the middle, don't know which is which and what is what. They try to find the answer, but the result and attitude displayed to them is frustrating. And hence, they choose to stay on the fence, while trying to figure out just what is going on actually.

The last group, I personally feel sorry for them. To live as ignorant, who don't give a shit about anything else other than themselves, is pitiful.

As mentioned in the Quran, those who live only for themselves without even caring about the duty as 'khalifah' of this earth, God has called them to be the same level as 'al-an-'am' or 'binatang ternakan.'

For those people, I believe they may have the reason of doing so, or the environment, culture or situation has influenced or forced them to be as such or to do as so. However it is never too late, and I pray so we will all try our best to be the best among the people on Earth.

Finally, I would like to wish 'Selamat Hari Merdeka' to all! Happy Merdeka! ^^

Ada Apa dengan Movie Malaysia?

Last weekend I spend my Sunday prancing around Pavilion, wasting my time like a boss. Plan is to watch Dark Knight Rises 2, but no good seat available (I thought there's only me who still didn't watch it regardless of being released almost a month already) but I was wrong. And so I bought a ticket to watch a Malay movie instead, titled 'SAM'.

Alert: This is not a movie review post.

SAM is about a couple; rather typical sweet-romantic-head-over-heels couple, who wish to marry each other, but their dream was crushed in a single night when each character starts to change, in an eerie way.

While watching this movie, I can't stop thinking about what has happened to the quality of local film, its direction, purpose, long term objective and vision of the producer.

Theme of the film is love & psychotic-action. While it might sounds very cliche for those who had watched English movie for the rest of their lives, such theme is deem unusual and successfully gave unexpected twist-of-event for most of Malay audience.

While try not to focus on this movie alone, I would like to derive the following points:

1. I should applaud local actors & actresses for their increasing quality in acting. Few names in this business are recognized for their excellent heart-felt portrayal, and do 'did' a good job in delivering the roles intended. Sam Shaheizy, Raja Farah, Adi Putra, Zulhelmy, Que Haidar, Umi Nazeera, Adflin Shauki - those are few names worth praised and some others not mentioned here. This new generation does give us hope for the next few years more.

2. I also feel that the producer did a good effort by trying to break the typical chain of local movie theme which usually evolves around love, drama, corporate world conflict, paranormal activities, slapstick comedy (or some brilliant comedy), et cetera. Such theme as 'psycho-action' or 'split-identity' are not a popular option in the market, as few years back it is not very much welcomed by most of local audience. I remembered the last film attempting to use such theme was one from Aziz M Osman titled 'Trauma', and the response was only luke-warm. Hence this return of psycho-theme does bring a fresh wave and open a new genre of film in the local scene. It might set a trend too.

3.  Originality

I can't refrain myself from feeling disappointed, however. When the attempt deserved a praise, the production is a wee-bit pathetic that I feel like being tortured for the rest of the 1 hour & a half.

While the idea can be adopted from Western movie, at least (I think) we could inject some our own local ideas in the storyline. But the storyline is cliche, predictable (at least for me) as it follows exactly as previously published American movie, and portrayed no originality at all.

Hence my question is, until when our local Malaysian industry will be like this? Taking idea from Western movie and produced a local movie with the same storyline without originality in it? How can we achieve a step further rather than just a mere copy-cat? How much longer should we stay at this level only?

4. Pop Culture

It is worrying how widely accepted the Western-pop culture is by Malaysian citizen. This is not about this particular film alone, but almost all of the films or I should say, the reality of modern society in Malaysia.

It is alarming how Malay culture (in particular) has changed over the past few years. It is even more alarming when we bring religion into this subject. Sitting in the hall, I was surrounded by 'couples' watching movie in pairs, and sighing how cute & romantic the couple in the movie was, all very loving and sweet to each other.

Talking about the subject of love, I have no intention to deny the purity of love between two people, and so I will not questioned truthfulness of such love whatsoever.

However, digging this matter even deeper, it is indeed alarming how Muslims community in Malaysia has no longer view such affection-display, holding hands, hugging between unmarried couple as something prohibited by religion, but it is accepted and even celebrated as 'very sweet, very romantic, an evidence of true love and there's nothing wrong with it.'

Hence the question is, how deep has such acceptance penetrated into our culture & society? How does it impacted our community's religious belief & practices among us?

Even more serious question, what is the level of Islamic understanding, belief, value & practices among Muslims in Malaysia?

While I am not trying to play 'ustazah' or religion-freak here, Muslims just couldn't simply turn a blind eye towards the current trend in the society.

Just how serious is the lack of principle, understanding & practices of Islamic value in Malaysian-Muslims community, that such behaviour displayed by unmarried man & woman is accepted as common, and even worse, accepted as a norm in our culture?

What is it the objective aspired by the producer besides commercial prospect?  Is it personal satisfaction? Artistic experiment? What is it the main goal the producer would like to impart on the society? What value would he want to blend within society? Does our local producer has any aspiration to educate the audience, or the only justification is just to break box-office record and no social responsibility at all?

5. Identity

I have attended a talk before, and the very question posted by the speaker struck me: What is it that Malaysian can offer - in films, arts, architecture, etc, that shows the very unique identity of Malaysia?

It made me realized that up till now, Malaysia really, still, did not have anything exclusively Malaysian, to offer to the world.

Puteri Gunung Ledang & Merong Mahawangsa might attempted to do so, however both did not accurately represent history of Malaysia or Malaysian as a whole.

Nasi Lemak 2.0 by Namawee bring the spirit of Malaysia on screen through sarcastic-comedy approach, however still did not bring out the pride of Malaysia besides showing the current multi-racial & political issues in Malaysia.

In conclusion, there is not a single production that truly represent the unique identity of Malaysian citizen, nor portrayed the true face of the country, its vision, aspirations or artistic value.

Really, what do we have in store actually?

This is indeed perplexing.

However, we can always be better. I believe in that always.

On how betterment could be employed, high hopes are put in current & future generation art groups.

Like it or not, social responsibility must be embedded into every individual in Malaysia, in order to have a collective result.

To be continued.
